Navigating the Journey to Parenthood as a member of the LGBTQ+ Community

While social and political climates have become more accepting of LGBTQ+ families in recent years, many families still face unique challenges, especially when it comes to growing their family. In this article, we’re sharing some helpful ways to navigate your journey to parenthood as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

1. Familiarize yourself with your employer benefits - Your employer may have benefits that can help with growing your family as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This could be in the form of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or other benefits that may give you a starting place for support.

2. Ask your manager or HR about time off availability and flexible work options – This can be a busy time, filled with doctor’s appointments, court hearings, and more. Speaking with your manager about the flexibility that is available to you will help you balance work and life more effectively. Explore flextime, the availability of sick or PTO days, or any other options that may be available to you.

3. Find support groups – Ask HR or your manager what Employee Resource Groups (ERG) exist currently. If your organization doesn’t currently have an ERG that supports LGBTQ+ parents and you’re interested in starting one, find out what the steps are for establishing a group. If you would like to join an existing group but none exist at your company, resources like RESOLVE can connect you with in-person and online support groups.

4. Connect with BenefitBump – Growing your family as a member of the LGBTQ+ community can be complicated and filled with stress. Your Care Navigator can help ease your stress by discussing your options, developing a plan, and sharing helpful resources for your individual path to parenthood.
